About Us

The small Society supports those who care for others.

The primary aim of The small Society is to support those who care for others, with particular emphasis, although not exclusively, on those caring for people with mental disorders. We achieve this by providing a place of refuge for short term breaks.

We offer short breaks in two separate dwellings, each one accommodating up to two people sharing for a maximum of 6 nights. Both have bathroom facilities and a small kitchenette. The outdoor space is shared and there are plenty of places around the site to relax and unwind.

Where can you find us?

The accommodation is in the centre of Deal, 10 minutes from the beach.

How does it work?

We offer stays of up to 6 nights, Sunday to Friday. Guests can arrive from 4pm onwards on Sunday afternoon and departure is by 10am the following Saturday morning.

There is no charge for staying with us.

How The small Society came to be...

Pete Dennis, founder of The small Society, found his home in Deal, Kent, 10 minutes walk from the sea, at an abandoned steam mill over 10 years ago. At the time, his bipolar disorder was still undiagnosed and untreated, but he recognised it as a place where he could settle and find peace.

He bought the property and land and started to build, using his skill as an engineer. Being bipolar meant that the project grew and grew, took shape, changed, halted while other projects took over, and then changed again.

In the end, Pete had built himself a house during the renovation (The Outside House), but he had also got side-tracked and accidentally added two more separate, living spaces - which ultimately meant he had room to spare.
